Previously, I was told that Krylon Pistachio was the correct equivalent for US Interior Green, and this was true. But I noticed that it seems the same shade of green is present in a picture of a display museum Grumman Avenger airplane. Am I right? I know that late WW2 German armor used a Luftwaffe green color for camouflage colors.

Sort of. The interior color for US aircraft from WWII through Vietnam, and some later was Zinc Chromate Green. It is a bit darker tha SeaFoam Green. There are a few out of the bottle matches to Zinc Chromate Green. Testors Model Master has it by the same name.

Zinc chromate is several shades darker than seafoam green. I just spoke to a gentleman in Hurst, Texas who is selling a wrecked P-51 Mustang.
My next bike build is a tribute to the Tuskegee airmen and will be based on (as in using actual parts from) a P-51. As I want to paint my frame zinc chromate and run a bare metal tank, we discussed the color a bit. Not all aircraft used the zinc chromate but luckily the P-51's did. And thankfully, for the larger scale I won't need to buy 25 bottle of Testor's. DuPont makes the color I need.

Rob, the Redtails P-51 bike sounds really cool. You'll have to post some pics once you get started on it.

It's not going to be a bike like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLVe1NkQA78

First off, I started rambling last night and kind of forgot my original intent was to tell you that the Zinc Chromate might be available in a rattle can.
Since Krylon does make a shade close the Seafoam I figured you're like me - if you don't have to bust out the airbrush, why bother?
At any rate, in the conversation I had from the gentleman, he said that Dupont makes a color that's a spot on match for Zinc Chromate, but it's not called that, but rather goes by a different name. Since I plan to contact him again I'll try to follow up the post with the name of the color.

Gino, I can post one photo when I get home, but I don't want to give away too much. Even my own friends are "borrowing" ideas from my last build. I can say that it won't look like the monstrosity that PJD built earlier this year in the televised biker build off on Discovery. The guy had an actual P-51 at his disposal (well so do I, sort of. It's in a museum not too far from me) and used not one styling cue from the actual plane. I'm not sure how three bladed wooden propellors for wheels are reminiscent of a P-51. If you're not familiar with it, just Google "PJD P-51."

Tom, I remember that song. However, if I had enough mojo to actually build a flying bike, I'd take my Ural sidecar rig and go Wallace and Gromit on it.

Oh, for you aircraft buffs, I'm trying to make wheels that actually look like P-51 wheels. Short of having them CNC'ed, I'm looking for something similar enough to capture the feel. The closest thing I've found are ten spoked BMW wheels, which I'd have to cut apart, respace, and reweld. If anyone knows of anything else resembling a P-51 wheel please do let me know.

From what I understand, Zinc Chromate wasn't a color of paint, but a additive to paint to prevent corrosion resistance, and a 1st coat often looked yellow. The next coat usually had some black or red added so that the painter could make sure that they got full coverage. After that Interior Green was usually applied. This is why different areas of the aircraft have a different color.

Here's a walkaround site of a Grumman Avenger:
http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/NARG/avengerwalkaround.html

Click on the different parts of the plane to see greater details.

I assume the plane was restored in the proper paint scheme.

The color in the cockpit and ball gunner's position is Zinc Chromate Green, as such.
