Why not both??? Money considerations?
If you want to learn more in depth about a particular aspect of dioramas then focus on that, for example Terrain, or armor, or figures go with the detailed one.
If you want to learn about overall such as display, story telling, positioning of subjects, etc go with the first one "How to build dioramas."
Then start saving your money for the next one.

I agree with Maki, Shep's book first for overall concepts and thinking processes and then the terrain book for ideas on specific scenes. Yes, I have both also. Be broke and happy!

I too like both books. Shep's book is really good for someone who needs an overview of different diorama-building techniques. The terrain book deals with just that terrain. It shows different techniques for creating really convincing groundwork. IMHO both are a must for anyone who builds dioramas.

My vote goes to Shep book also. It is the foundation of my work.
Detailed, yet simple.
(Thanks again Shep!)

I am also a fan of Shep's book. I have always enjoyed using it. You can get some really good ideas by checking out his work.
