My lovely wife decided t get me a model for Christmas. I'd given her a couple of ideas for likely models, both of which she ignored and she gave me one of these:

http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/32539king_tiger/index.htm

A 1/48 (!) Tamiya King Tiger (Porsche Turret).

So I've never tried 1/48 Armour before, nor a German WW2 Vehicle since I was a kid, and certainly never zimmerit.

I've read through the instructions and it seems that all three marking options in the kit have zimmerit, and the instructions say to use Tamiya Polyester putty and a Tamiya zimmerit tool.

I've actually got a few different razor saws, one of which will probably suffice for the tool, but I was wondering what people out there use for the putty?

I can get Tamiya polyester putty if that really is the best stuff, but I figure they are recommending it not because it's necessarily the ideal product, but because it's their own brand.

So can anyone offer any tips or guidance on techniques and products for getting a zimmerit coating in 1/48?

Cheers

Phil

Hi and hope you enjoy your build.

Here's an article on putty in 1/48

Cavalier, eduard, voyager and others make pre made sets. You might do a Google search on that or eBay. I like the cavalier set as its easy to cut and apply but it costs about $20.

Look at track48.com and onefortyeight.com for gallery pics and help too.

I just used Bondo glazing putty and my razor saw on my 1:48 Panther and it came out pretty darn good.

Or.... you could forget the zim and build the prototype version that's in the Bovington museum.. if there aren't a lot of changes between it and the kit. Here are pics of it:
