I have been trying oil washes (distilled turpentine + oil paint) because it seems to me they give a more pigmented wash that runs into the crevices/cracks better.

But it occurred to me that maybe this will take off the acrylic paint I'm using.

Is that correct? Would a coating of Future Floor wax or another gloss coating protect against this?

Thanks.

Oil wash with turpentine should not have any affect on an acrylic. I always do use a coat of future first just to seal the paint job and help the wash flow more freely.

Ken, when doing oil washes or pin washes the best thong to do is: once your base color is dry, spray or brush at least 2 acrylic clear coat (gloss) over the whole thing. Then when it is dry and all shinny you can oil wash all you want!

On page 5 you can see step by step what I`ve done as far as washes.
I use only tamia paint prior to my oil washes wich are diluted with Izosol a non toxic mineral spirit (odorless)

Thanks for the responses.

By the way, am I correct in thinking that the oil washes work better than just diluting acrylic paint or is it my imagination?

By sealing your acrylic base coats with future, Glosscoat, or a hobby acrylic clear gloss coat, you're protecting your paint from contamination and permanently changing the colors, especially if you want to remove a wash, change, or return to the basic color once again.

Sealing should also be done to protect one wash from being diluted or even removed by the next filter/wash, especially if it's the same medium.

Oil pigments are some what finer then acrylic pigments, but being diluted 80% or more, it becomes a moot point. The real advantage of using oils or acrylics is the working time. Acrylics with a alcohol base dry very quickly, therefore limiting your working time, while enamel based oils with a mineral spirit base have a much longer drying/working time.
