So I picked up the new Airfix 1/48 Coyote & Jackal with the idea of converting them into the Project Redfin (Joint Project 2097 Phase 1A) 'Nary' Special Operations Vehicle - Special Reconnaissance.
The Supacat Extenda was selected and named in honour of Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) David Nary, a mobility expert of the Special Air Service Regiment who was killed during a mission rehearsal exercise in the Middle East on 6 Nov 06.
Open source material on the Nary is pretty sparse - but information can be gleaned from various sources.
Firstly, going through the instructions, parts were identified for substitution. Where a step is not mentioned, instructions were followed:
Jackal:
Step 13:18A: 7.62mm ammunition. This is stowed in the vehicle commander's footwell on the Nary SOV. 21A: commander's grab bar and Bowman display. This is deleted and a combined 10kg stowage box and grab handle is used in lieu. '10kg stowage boxes' are approximately 10.9mm long, 4.4mm wide (base), 5.4mm high (overall).
Step 14: 25C: Driver's side grab bar and Bowman display. This is deleted and a combined 10kg stowage box and grab handle is used in lieu. '10kg stowage boxes' are approximately 10.9mm long, 4.4mm wide (base), 5.4mm high (overall).
Step 21: 13C: rear lights require modifying to Australian standard. An easier solution is to cover the with lead foil or another material to simulate the light covers on the real vehicle. 13C: the UK style numberplate requires removal. 13C: the tailgate on the SOV-SR is higher than the UK model by approximately 2mm on the model.
Step 22: 24B: do not install.
Step 23: 10C: remove the alignment ridge for Part 24B (of Step 22).
Step 27: if building a 'baseline' vehicle, do not fit part 29A.
Step 28: 28A: 50 cal ammunition storage is not fitted here - 7 liners (50 cal or 40mm) are fitted to the engine cover surrounding the gunner's floor plate on part 26A: an additional spare wheel is required here. Do not fit 8C if building a 'baseline' vehicle.
Step 31: 22A: the rear RHS bracket resembles part 6D of step 32.
Step 33: 18C, 24C, 25A: do not fit.
Step 34: skip this step.
Step 36: 11A remove the rectangular UK-style number plate.
Step 37: 17A remove the rectangular mounts on each end of the upper-surface.
Step 38: 1B: remodel dashboard to Nary-type. This requires removal of the upper section 'above the line' and replacement with a higher upper instrument panel, 14.2mm long at the base, 3.6mm high. 27A: the ammunition stowage/glove compartment has been replaced with a vacant space on the upper level and racking for 4 x 7.62mm ammunition liners on the lower level.
Step 39: 4B, 5B MBSGD pedestals. delete.
Step 40: 22B, 23B, MBSGD pedestal guards. delete.
Step 41: 26B, 27B, UK pattern quad-66mm MBSGD are replaced with triple 76mm Wegman launchers on the four corners of the vehicle.
Step 42: do not fit Step 41 or part 21C.
Step 44: 3A: is replaced by a folding platform to carry 3 x water jerrycans.
Step 48: 2A: armoured door. not fitted in baseline configuration.
Step 49: 1A: armoured door. not fitted in baseline configuration.
Step 54: 14A, 15A UK ECM. Not fitted.
Step 55: 26B, 27B, UK pattern quad-66mm MBSGD are replaced with triple 76mm Wegman launchers on the four corners of the vehicle.
Step 56: Step 55 UK pattern quad-66mm MBSGD are replaced with triple 76mm Wegman launchers on the four corners of the vehicle. 5A: delete.
So, that's the Jackal. The above will leave you with a hybrid armoured/baseline vehicle.
More to follow.

Hello Matt,
Not many:

This is a prototype Phase 1B vehicle - NOT a Nary:

(You can tell the difference by whether the vehicle has vertical sides between the front seats and the spare wheel).

Okay,
I've done some more work on the conversion to the Nary SOV-SR (Special Operations Vehicle - Special Reconnaissance) - limited to notes at this stage.
Here goes:
The side panels in Step 12 require the following mods:
Part 10A: remove the ballistic panel with the moulded-on netting forward of the side 'tower', including the triangular shaped piece perpendicular to the panel, leaving the latch. Remove the top ballistic panel on the side, cutting it down so that the lower side panel is level with the engine cover/gunner's deck.
Part 8A: remove the ballistic panel with the moulded-on netting forward of the side 'tower', including the triangular shaped piece perpendicular to the panel, leaving the latch. remove the sideways-'L' shaped ballistic panel above the meshed sections.
Part 26A (chassis 'tub'): remove the locating ridges for the spare ammunition (Part 18A, Step 13) and the driver's stowage box (Part 25C, Step 14).
Step 18: remove the locating ridge for the ECM box in the tray (Part 1C).
Step 23: Part 10C remove the 'quarter' ballistic panels on either side of the uprights. Also remove the fittings on the top bar of the roll-over protection system. racking for an 'underslung' M72A6 66mm rocket (15.7mm long in 1/48) is fitted here.
More to follow.
In good news, the Coyote is easier to convert to the Phase 1B prototype SOV-DA (Direct Action, a.k.a. Commando & NOT, repeat NOT a 'Nary'), with changes limited to stowage and the gun ring.
Regards,
Greg
