I looked up the Osprey book NVA And Viet Cong and at the DML Viet Cong figure set. I'm not sure if the figures are supposed to be wearing the "black pyjamas"; the clothing looks rather like uniforms. Also, what colors can I get away with and still be authentic?

The figures in the Dragin kit are all wearing the common black pyjamas, except the one who has a khaki shirt.

The Vietcong wore a mix of uniforms, whatever they could get their hands on. The black pyjamas were most common. But I have also seen them wearing olive green uniforms, as well as khaki. You should be fine with those colours.

Tom,
I've just painted a VC figure wearing the typical black pyjamas you mention above.
I used Vallejo Model Colour black mixed with a little sunny skin tone for the base. This adds warmth to the black. For highlights add more sunny skin tone to the base colour & for shadow add more black to the base.
Mine has come out very nicely. I'm very pleased with the result!
I hope this helps.

Joe.

PS I'd like to know which Vallejo colours would work best for the NVA uniform!

Thanks! Incidentally, it seems the figures "A" and "B" have the exact same torsos, so they both could have khaki shirts presumably. I get the idea that color could vary a bit too.

I'm actually using two kits because I need more than two standing figures. I didn't want to make them too monotonous.
