I am building a Panzer IV C. I want to depict one that was deployed to Poland, as part of Fall Weiß. What color would the primer for this tank be?

I will be using Tamiya's German Gray acryl.

RAL 8012 (red oxide). All vehicles built in Germany and Austria during the second World War were painted RAL 8012. It's when you get to the interior colors things get a little bit dicey depending on when the vehicle was built.

Forgot to add the link:

Red oxide if you want to do as they did at the productionline, but you could also achieve some interesting colours with a black primer, then adding layers of grey, maybee with a hint of blue in it?

To be historicly correct, you could use the painting guide on German amour:

World War II German AFV Camouflage Painting Datasheet and Timeline

1. December 1, 1927 – Nr. 17 Erdgelb-matt, Nr. 28 Gruen-matt, Nr. 18 Braun-matt.
2. November 7, 1938 – Nr. 46 Dunkelgrau covering 2/3, Nr. 45 Dunkelbraun covering 1/3.
3. July 31, 1940 – Dunkelgrau RAL 7021.
4. February 18, 1943 – Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 basecoat, Olivgrun RAL 6003, Rotbraun RAL 8017.
5. August 19, 1944 – Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 basecoat, Olivgrun RAL 6003, Rotbraun RAL 8017 in Hinterhalt – Tarnung (the “Ambush” scheme).
6. September 31, 1944 – Rotoxid primer, “sparingly applied patches” of Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, Olivgrun RAL 6003, Rotbraun RAL 8017.
7. November 20, 1944 – Olivgrun RAL 6003 basecoat, Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, Rotbraun RAL 8017 “in sharp contours”. (To go into full effect June 1, 1945).

It once again comes down to the old discussion on colours. Looking forward to seing your build Matt.

This was the first list I checked. However, it does no list the primer used.

German Armour used Red Oxide Primer throughout the war.
there is no evidence that i am aware of to suggest a different colour being used.!

Matt:

I'll guess that you are doing that Dragon SuperKit C?

As others have said.... Rot-oxide RAL 8012 will be your "main man" for depicting true metal primer.

Your paint scheme most assuredly has to be the current regulation 1/3 "dark brown" over dunkelgrau, for Fall Weiss, 1939. I would be absolutely sure that all panzer IV going into Poland would have been in really good shape, both mechanically and paint-wise - coming as they were right from "peace-time" unit lagers and maintenance.

Short of actual battle-scars, I would think that any such Fall Weiss tank would be pretty entire, so not a lot of chipping?

Cheers!

Bob
