hi

i have the badger 1051 patriot. i sent the airbrush to the hobby company to be tested because when i spray there is lots of small dots of paint. the hobby company tested the airbrush and said there is noting wrong with it. i got the airbrush back with a sheet that thew tested the airbrush. on the sheet there is the same problem that i have sent it back for and they say that there is noting wrong with the airbrush. the hobby company sprayed tamiya x-7 and xf-60 and said that there is no problem.

What paint are you using?
What are you thinning the paint with?
What pressure are you using?
What distance are you spraying away from the target?
Are you spraying in a conditioned space (indoors) or unconditioned? (outdoors, garage, etc)

Hi Ed,

I don't see that the test card is ok. In fact I can see exactly what you are talking about and unless you can cure it by cleaning/experimenting with dilutions/experimenting with pressures I would say the airbrush needs looking at. Don't be fobbed off, and perhaps go to Trading Standards for advice.

All the best,

Paul

Hey there
Try thinning your paint a little more and try using rubbing alcohol instead of the factory stuff. I use tamiya all the time with the alcohol and haven't had one ounce of trouble. I also use both a paasche HL-1 and a VL-1. Air pressure is about the same as yours, anywhere from 10 to 30 psi.

The paint looks as if it is not atomised fully and is spitting, all those little dots of paint. if that is the test card from the Airbrush company I am very surprised as the Airbrush company has a very good name. try contacting them again expalin clearly why you believe there is a fault and show them the card you were sent. however it does look to me to be a paint issue rather than a brush issue.

the card is from the hobby company after their test they did. they have said that the is not a problem with the brush that the problem is with the paint not being thinned. but even with the special person that tested the brush they have the same problem.

This is just a suggestion; buy a pre thinned paint with a strong colour and as it is a gravity fed brush try using it at 10psi, then please let us see an image of the result so that we are better placed to judge the result.

3 things come to my mind seeing the spray pattern:
- too low pressure (10 psi is only 0,68 bar, too low, 0,8-0,9 bar is just good for Vallejo air and might be insufficient for Tamiya).
- vapor in the air supply (maybe you do not have an air filter or it is not working)
- a very thorough cleaning of the airbrush may help, especially when switching between solvent acrylic (Tamiya, Gunze etc) and acryl-vinyl (Vallejo), because their carriers do not always tolerate each other and may form little clogs.

Also a bent needle tip or damaged nozzle may cause splatters.

I had the same problem with the same airbrush. I bought a new needle and turned up the air pressure to about 15 psi and it stopped doing it. I am using tamiya paints and thinner. I think I had bent my needle while trying to clean some dried paint off of it, and I was using only 5 psi to try and paint some camo on some 15mm models. I think 5 psi is not enough for the tamiya paints.
