Started an oil wash on a wing thing last night (I am so not cheating on you, stop it.) and had a weird reaction. Used a mostly black wash with a tiny bit of brown (burnt sienna?) and white added in to tone is down and look more grimey. Used my trusty odorless mineral spirits to thoroughly thin is down, as this was a sludge wash, when I started to apply it, it seemed "greasy" and did not want to easily come off with a clean brush. The paint deposited in a strange way. I really do not know how to describe it properly but I have never had this reaction before. Any thoughts?

If the pigments seem to seperate/clump, try another thinner. I had this problem years ago, when using different thinner variants. Today I only use Humbrols enamel thinner, and dont have this problem.

I'll ask a stupid question Damon...were the three colors you used compatible with each other? And like Frank mentioned, most likely the thinner.

Hello Damon, Hope you are well buddy.
What brand of oil paints did you use? Ive had the same type thing while using cheap brands before and odorless Tups. I started using Winsor & Newton Oils and Mig oils with Klean Strip brand odorless mineral spirits and have yet to have a problem. In fact the Spirits is the best ive used and is the cheapest. I get it at Wal-Mart. HTH a little Damon.
Regards,
Gary

The three oils were all Windsor and or grumbacher I think. The thinner was odorless mineral spirits from either wal mart or the hardware store, but I have been using this combo on all of my past build over the last year without this issue. I a, going to try the art brand odorless tonight and see if that helps. Will report back when I have some info. Thanks for the input guys.

True oils. My only thought was that the black I was using was old and my have some issue from age. But this is only a guess. I am pretty sure I have used it recently with no issue, but this time something just did not jive.

Thin each color, with your thinner and see what happens. if it's the oils, you find out which one. If it's the thinner it will react the same way on each color. If it's only reacting the same way on one of them or two of them it not compatible with the oils.

The strange thing is the mix looked fine until I started brushing it on that's when it went wacky, but I will test your theory and get back to you. Cheers
