I've been kicking around an idea for a build I want to do. While doing some research on it yesterday I had the idea that it might make a good campaign. So I'll throw this out and see if there is any interest.
There are thousands of military vehicles on static display around the world. There's one by the local VFW Post that I drive by very often. I thought it would be fun to build that exact vehicle. Not as it was during its service life but as it is now. So here we go.
Build any military vehicle any scale but it must be based on a real vehicle on display somewhere.
- At least one recent picture of the subject must be posted to show what it currently looks like.
- The build must be in a diorama or at least a small vignette to show the vehicles current surroundings.
- The subject can be an AFV, a softskin or an aircraft.
- All the normal photos required for a campaign before, during and on completion of the build will apply.
Because this is a bit different and will take a little extra field work up front, the start date for the build will be 11 Nov 13. The end date would be 01 Jun 14.
Any takers?

Nice idea.
I've had a similar idea on the back-burner for a bit. It involved a grandfather, his son, and his grandson standing before a tank display at a museum. The display has varied between the grandfather looking at a Sherman, his son looking at a Patton or Abrams. And the young son looking at an empty space in between the two tanks. I could actually go four generations with three vehicles (add Vietnam era).
I could maybe tweak that design some to fit the "actual vehicle" requirement some. Museums are always rotating out displays to each other and changing out their displays. So it's feasible that you could see such a lineup.
Nice choice of start date.

There's a Sherman Easy 8 I wanted to do. I had same basic idea. A Father/Son or Grandfather/Grandson looking at the tank.Nice idea.

The reason I was thinking 'actual vehicle' is to see how well I/we could duplicate the rust and wear from real life. It would be a nice challenge and a good learning aid.

Hi Robert,
welcome to the modellers paradise.
Your campaign sounds a bit like a "Modelling a foto" 1 and 2, I could be game for this, if it takes off. I hope you have a better attendence or finish rate than Salīs campaign though.

Thanks for the interest. I've if only a few enlist it can still be a fun build.
Hopefully there will be more interest and it can get going. We'll see.

What if the diorama requirement is dropped. Any build based on a real life subject built to it current state. It could be a museum piece or a static display.

Robert, I did some online searching and there's a lot of pictures of displayed vehicles out there. You have VFW Halls, parks, museums, private collections, etc. I was looking for pics of a tank on display at a local park. I believe that it was removed years ago...the way that part of town is now I'd need a tank to go and see if it is still there.
I think a dio base for this one in some cases is needed, but I'd have no objections about making it optional. I like it to be opened up for non-specific vehicles. Maybe even include vehicles being restored.
The boon here is that you can go with a vehicle that has been sitting outside for decades with little care. Or you can go with a vehicle that has been kept inside and in better than factory condition. For the latter, this could be a great campaign for novice and casual modelers that don't want to go to extremes with weathering.
Good luck with getting this one going. I guess count me in.

That sounds fine to me. I think it would open it up to more options. The more freedom to explore the build the better.
Anything from neat and clean to old, rusted and battle damaged our there. Getting the weathering, or lack there of, right should be fun and interesting see what folks do.
We just need 7 or 8 more and we're ready to go.

I'd be game for this! One thing I'd suggest is making it clear that the photo being built doesn't need to be recent - that way folks can build all those WWI town monuments that were hauled away for scrap at the start of the Second Round in 1939...

Ok. If you a case like that I don't see why not. The idea was to try to match a real life vehicle, but I can see what you're saying too.I'd be game for this!
