Not getting any responses on the history forum, so I thought I would post it here. I am planning on a large diorama, centered around Hobby Boss' 1/72 Dora railway gun. I need to know what vehicles supported this behemoth. I don't have a clue to what it's contingent was composed of. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Matt,

went thru the same thought process with my Dora ( 1/35th )
Figure you could use some opel blitz trucks - cargo, radio type (early vers.) kubelwagons, horch command cars, and some AA half tracks. BMW mc's and tons of troops!
The 8 car support train would be ideal, not sure if its made in 1/72nd or 1/35th for that matter.

Simple enough. I think I will be using some railroad figures, for the majority of soldiers. I'm also looking for photos of the crane used to ready the Dora for operation. I've only heard passing phrases about it.

The squadron signal on rail guns gives some clues as to what you need. Umm depending on how large you are going to build your diorama you could include a heavy flak position as well as a smaller flak emplacement. For the crew include guard dogs and civilian railroad workers. The main cranes are available in a rare 1/35 resin kit that pops up occasionally on ebay as well as a couple scratchbuilt one's and a diesel engine.I hope I helped.

Thank you Alex. I won't be buying a 1:35 of the crane. I just need reference material on it. The dio will run just a few inches past each side of the Dora. I'm thinking the flaktracks and an emplacement should do. Does anyone know if the Krupp personnel cars were present?

Buy the book that Alex said and see if you see any Krupp personnel cars?

When I built my 1/35 Dora I had grand visions of what you are trying to do, a few suggestions were cranes, rail flat cars, lots of them AA guns Train engines and lots of workers. There were 2 diesel locomotives that moved the gun with ammo cars one for shells and one for powder connected to the gun on the rear. There is a great book if you can find it that has a ton of pictures of the gun being assembled. but be ware it is expensive and in German. also the Dora was stored between mounds of earth covered with camo netting and pushed out on a curved track to fire. I hope this helps

Im sorry I sold it 5 or 6 years ago for $300.00 I tried to find it on a couple sites with no luck. If you search around for 1/35 builds, as there were many, even me you might find it. I think I did my build on FSM, but I dumped all my pictures on that site when I quit useing that board.
My dora sits in the rafters in the garage covered in plastic as I could not find a place for it.
To answer a question you made eariler, everything was sent by trains to Russia and there was even a general assigned to the gun, the man power alown is waht doomed the gun. Just too many. Krupp had personal there for assembly, I dont beleive they drove. as soon as the gun was fired, I beleive 40 shells it was taken apart and shipped back to Germany to sit till then end of the war never fired again. at the end of the war was captured and the steel was split between the allies, It really surved no purpose than a terror wepon for the Nazi's. There were 3 guns total built , one for testing 1 deployed and one never shot. I am going by memory so I may be off on a couple of facts

Would it be Deutsche Eisenbahn Geschuteze by Gerhard Taube? There's several on Amazon ranging from $135 to $315 at the moment. I'd love to pick one up but there's no way I could afford it at the moment.

Just found it, myself. Seeing as how I will be starting by building the Dora, I should have plenty of time to find the book at its lowest price.

There is one other thing you may look intis that I watched a build that the trucks had a piviot point in the center to aid in rounding the curves. The Soar Art kit did not have it and I dont know if the Hobby boss did this. I did not find this out until I was long done with my build. It was always hard to tell in the pictures, but when you had that big of a contunious truck with that many axles the radious of the curve would have had to be huge for it not to destroy the rails. My suggestion would be scour the builds to find this. If I can find my notes on this I may be able to help you.

I've decided not to build the Dora, yet. I realized that I don't even have a big enough bench and no idea where I could displayed it, completed. I will gladly share my references, with anyone who is interested. Just shoot me a pm.
