Hi
I want to show you my Matilda Flail Tank (Skorpion), the proyect is not yet finished. I could see many people making this model but they always chose the same type when there is another very interesting in my opinion.
I found these images in internet and I decided to create my own blueprints of the skorpion tank, based in those pictures, my intuition and mainly my imagination.
The first issue was to improve slighty the Tamiya´s Kit Matilda. It was the oldest one with many mistakes. It was very useful for my proyect that my company send me to work close to Saumur, in france, where there is a wonderful Tanks Museum, all the original photos are from there. So...
First step was to simulate metal foundry texture in turret and other parts.
One thing that Tamiya´s kit hadn´t, were the skids for tracks, it has small wheels instead. I made them from Evergreen sheet.
The exhaust silencers.
I have modified the elbows and have added them flanges. I added also brass strips with overlenght to adjust after to the model.
I closed the holes of the original kit with plastic and I redone some pieces in that area.
Front of tank
1. These pieces were build from Evergreen and tin strips.
2. Rebuild welds with green stuff.
3. Cut the corner.
4. To Close the grating with Evergreen.
5. Build this with green stuff.
Rebuild Headlights
1. Lights modified.
2. Brass strips added.
3. I should have change this part but finally i couldn´t, sorry.
4. Headlights added
5. Rebuild rearview mirror
The exahust.
1. Make exahust arrangement with brass wire.
2. Add flanges.
3. Cover with green stuff.
4 y 5. Modelize the exhaust and elbows.
6. Add clamps.
The extra tank.
More brass and Evergreen.
Rear of tank
I rebuild the taillights, handles of the engine cover and exahust supports.
Turret
The turret boxes and its supports, and signal flags box.
Wireless aerial
Smoke launchers
General views of these items.
Some handles, a lamp and commander´s hacht.
Finally I changed the tracks by others from Bronco and that´s all, maybe I will add supports for jerry cans on the rear but I don´t know. Tomorrow the mine flail.
Un saludo

Fernando, your super talented and your research is impeccable. For goodness sake, why not use the new kit on an effort like this? That kit is not deserving of all that fabulous work you are doing.

Some progress
The box for motor and the main structure of mine flail.
Now I will show you the process to construct the roller. It has made with a tin plate rolled. After I added the cables (made with rolled brass wire) and chains (naval modelling fittings) and small pieces of evergreen to attach them to roller.
The crankshaft was made with the rest of matilda sprues.
Hope you like

Extraordinary work
No less impressive is what you're using as the base kit - the older Matilda which must really add to the modiications...
Keep the details coming!!!

This really is some amazing work! I have always liked the flail, but never considered the possibility of scratching it. Keep up the good work!

Thanks to all for comments.
I'm making some drawings or blueprints for Mine Flail when I finish them I will show you, maybe there are useful for someone.

Fantastic work, Fernando. It's always great to see other people's scratchbuilding techniques. I have an Aussie Matilda planned based on the old Tamiya kit.
Cheers!

Hello
I have finally joined the different parts of mine flail, making some adjustments to fit properly on Matilda.
I have found that it is better to let some cables extend to the ground.
So they will support the mine flail and not have to build a special structure to support its weight.
I will paint both parts separately but you can see the set more or less in its final position.
Un saludo

That looks great. Did you have to add weight to the Matilda, to keep it from pitching forward?

As the scratch building class is a go, I would like a copy. I can use it as my first project.

I hope not, at the beginning I thought it would be necessary but if pay attention to brass wires some of them arrive to the ground and support the set.
But in fact I have not yet attached the structure to the tank, so... I will give you a definitive answer a.s.a.p.

What kind of paper format you use in USA? We usually use A4 in Europe, it´s important to get the properly scale when you print.

US letter size is
Letter 8.5" × 11" 215.9mm × 279.4mm
DIN A4 is:
8.3 x 11.7 inches x 210 x 297 mm
So a 210mm x 279mm page size should print on US Letter or A4 without scaling issues.

Don´t know, my blueprints are made in the way when you print them you must chose a specific format without margins.
Then if you put this specific format in the printer, printing should be 99% at the correct scale. (the other 1% is for immeasurable troubles that always happen)
I will two blueprints one in A4 and other in U.S. letter

Letter size is narrower & longer, A4 is wider & shorter,
so if you make a CUSTOM paper size of err Narrow & Short (eg, 215mm x 275mm), output from your design package as a .PDF & set your printer options to 100%, (no scaling/shrinking)
it will print on A4 OR Letter size without issues.
