Well here is my 251 so far. Boy, do a bit of research and you realize how 'off' some of the old Tamiya stuff is #:-)
This little booger has scratch seat backs, redone driver/codriver seat backs, reworked driver compartment (removed replaced pieces parts), reworked the towing hitch, shaved down a lot of the oversized hangers, hinges etc, added detail to the door.

I am also working on one atm. You are correct with the kit being way off. The hardest part is finding photo references dealing with the interiors.
