It is the one thing that motivates a lot of us to build soft skins and Allied armor.

Actually it was a paste that the Germans applied to some of their tanks to keep magnetic mines from sticking to them. Zimmerit= anti-magentic mine paste...
Someone who knows way more about it than I do you surely fill in the details.

yes, but from what i've heard, it is a bit tricky to put it on and make it look good at the same time

You can buy the expensive Cavalier zimmerit sheets which look pretty good, or just practice a lot with putty. Tamiya makes a P/E set of tools for two different widths of raked pattern application.
