Let's say the cap wasn't tight enough on my thinner and it spilled on my white carpet just now. Does it come out easily? If so how?

Assuming your thinner is oil based, my suggestion is to use Wine Away. Stuff works wonders on wine, grease stains, even gets paint out of your carpet. That would be my first try. Cheers.

If it's only thinner, it will all evaporate. Thinner is a volatile solvent that has no solids in it.

Your only issue would be explaining the order to your wife.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but spilled thinner could react with the glue in the carpet and make it hard, or release the bond of the glue to the floor, also in the future keep in mind as the thinner vapor could ignite if exposed to a spark or pilot light in a furnace or waterheater , always open a window and air the area out quickley.
