What does the little "gear" showing up on the left side of a forum subject mean? I've searched the FAQ and the site and can't find a answer. Sorry for the stupid question, curiosity is winning out.

It indicates a build log.

Those threads with the gear symbol are build threads, or blogs, as the latest posts page calls them.
When you start out your thread, you can choose mark it as a build blog, which enables them to be filtered in the latest posts page.
