I believe it is called the Charger, at least the US Army ones with the Detroit Diesel engine

There is no official name or designation for the RG-31 in US military service.

It is called the Nyala in Canadian service as well, although I am not sure if that is "official" or just the name used amongst the troops as that is the name of the vehicle in SA, where it is made.

You are on the right track with your thoughts. The Army calls it the RG-31 Mk.3 Armoured Patrol Vehicle (APV). The troops sometimes call it a Nyala. Nyala is Swahili for Antelope.
The official name probably can't be Nyala in Canada since it doesn't translate to a French version!

That and it isn't a Canadian animal.

That may be its official name but I've never heard it called that. I've always heard it referred to as either the RG, or the 31.

At the moment in the UK there is a TV programme called "Bomb Patrol " following a US Navy EOD team in Afghanistan. Last night there was an IED strike which took out an RG and the troops talking about it all just called it the RG .
Hope this helps
