Hi all. I'm a newbie and just getting back into the model building scene after about 15 yrs.
I'm doing an early Tiger 1. I was thinking of going with the 501st Heavy tank battalion from North Africa. Particularly, the Tunisia campaign.
Does anybody know what colors the crew uniforms were here? I've googled it to death and am still unsure. (damn black and white photos).

There were no Tigers in North Africa. All shipments were intercepted by the Royal Navy.

Hi Sean,
I have only seen black and white photos, I have just Googled 'Tigers in Tunisia' and got a few good images, this being one - with a lot of interesting uniforms...

Hope this helps
All the best,

Sorry Matt but that's just plain wrong. There were Tigers in Tunisia. Look it up.
The crew uniforms would have been Afrika Korps uniforms perhaps worn with the black Panzer crew schirmmütze.

I think you will find the Tiger 1 at Bovington Tank Museum would argue with that Matt.

Now that I think of there were 19 Tigers in 2 Abteilungen. The 501 and 504 I think. I might need to check on the unit numbers.

Sorry, there WERE Tigers in Africa. They were with the 7 and 10 Panzer divisions under Arnim and Rommel. There weren't huge numbers, and they were all gone by May 43'.

Thanks for the info everybody. Rommels 'Africa Korps' were already there after the beat down in Egypt. They wore the olive drab. Of course the paint I have is the Field grey and the Black. Lol
I'll check the links for sure.
The book "Army at Dawn" goes into some pretty clear detail about the joint Anglo-American campaign in Africa. A good read, but doesn't mention fatigue colors. haha.

My sources may have "overlooked" that, for some reason. I'm beginning to trust British documentaries and reports less and less.

I'll have to dig for the reports and second documentary. They are somewhere on my hard drive. The lastest I watched was War Zone. The other was either Last Days of WWII or The War.

Matt there were 40 to 50 Tiger 1 tanks in North Africa and the Tiger 1 at Bovington Tank Museum was captured in North Africa.

No 111 was it not? Hit by a just under the gun manlet and the round jammed the turret ring. Correct?

I think you are on pretty dodgy ground coming out with that sort of statement.

@Alan
Not really mate... You know there is only 1 (one!) country in the world where they do things right... Right?

No offense intended. I know that all references are to be taken with a grain of salt. But, I've been caught unawares by references from Britain on more than one occasion. What I would really like to see are the battle reports published within the country, during the war. Unfortunately, I don't believe that these still exist.
