Do some of you more experienced modelers use cotton wool for explosions gunfire etc. If you do t then is there anything else I could use?
thanks
Harry

You can try C-4. Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

The method I've seen used the most is the cotton balls/steel wool. I have heard of molding wax in a cone shape, then spraying it with turf, dirt, and such and placing it in the diorama. (This would be for an artillery/landmine explosion) Also, using Woodland Scenics water effects can come out nice.

You could try the expanding foam method....

Yeah, i think the best ones I've seen are using the foam to create a form for a lit clear resin mold as in the Godzilla example. Not easy, but pretty darned good in appearance.

Or maybe something like this
http://militarymodels.co.nz/2012/10/18/awesome-diorama-of-a-truck-in-an-explosion/
Looks like the guy who created that piece of art used, among other stuff, cotton wool. It looks really awesome.

I saw this dio already and was impressed by his modeling ability. I think he got the feeling absolutely correct here but the color is too white. I have seen hundreds of explosions and they are all grey,or if in soft dust or dirt, then they take the color of the dust or dirt.
The only time white is correct is for weapons that use black powder. Or the explosion taking place on chalky soil?

There not really explosions but where bullets are kicking up dust. I may include a couple and use the foam idea. Thanks for the replies, also is it hard doing it with foam?
