Very few Flakpanzer IV Ostwinds were completed before wars end (less then 40). Most if not all of the photos's I've seen of Ostwinds, show some form of Zimmerit on the lower hull. A good source of reference on the Ostwind are: Nuts & Bolts # 13 "Wirbelwind/Ostwind", and Panzer Tracts #12 "Flakpanzers" books.

Unfortunatley, the Ostwind is on of the LEAST documented German fighting vehicles of WWII. Maybe others can help me out more in this dept ?

The Italeri 1/35th Ostwind kit is the PROTOTYPE, used as the test vehicle during the Ardennes Offensive of 1944-45. It depicts Zimmerit on the box art. When you compare this to period (factory) photos of this vehicle, it will reveal the correct Zimmerit.

Cavalier makes 1/35th Zimmerit sets for the Pz IV Ausf H, and Ausf J. Either of these sets will work on an Ostwind. Eduard makes a set of PE Zimmerit for the Tamiya Wirbelwind kit, so this may work for the Ostwind kit as well. Zimmerit layout was very similar on both vehicles.

Most if not all Ostwinds (and the Wirbelwind too) were built on Pz Kpfw IV Ausf G, H, and J hulls returned from the front for overhaul. Few if any were built using brand new hulls. Ostwinds had Zimmerit applied to the lower hull only, and not the turret. Some may have retained the original Zimmerit left over from the parent vehicle.

Anyhow, I hope this helps you out with your quest.

Cheers !

Robert
