There are books out there that have pictures and I tried doing a internet search and there wasn't nothing really saying what was used. So I thought I would ask and see if any experts would help because I really don't have money to buy the books.
I would appreciate any help in just what was used I know the BMP was used but there is so many I'm not sure what else and what version so I can build a dio accurately.
Happy Modeling

Hi;
If your not looking for a special vehicle, BMPs, T-55s, T-62s,
BTRs, ! What type of vehicle are you thinking about the most,
If your thinking MBT then id look at the T-62. The BMP is a great subject, but theres only the BMP-1 by Trump, the BMP-2 would be a good pik but there arent any Accurate BMP-2s.
As for Pic's or subjects they should be easy too find.
CHEERS; MIKE.

Pretty much the entire array of Soviet military equipment from the time ended up in the Afghan theater.
I will try and keep my list to vehicles that there are kits available of (to my best knowledge).
Ural 4320 truck and gun truck variants, also Grad 21
Gaz/Uaz trucks and jeeps, in particular UAZ 469
MTLB armoured carrier
BRDM-1/2/other
ZSU-23
BTR-60/70/80
BMP-1/2
BMD-1/2
T-55/62/72/80/ others? There are much more informed sources for Soviet tanks who are likely to chime in on this.
Probably many others. If you have a couple hours on the internet one night, here is a good thread of photos from the Soviet Afghan war. Plenty of good reference material there.

Hi Bill;
Ive got some other ideas that may Help.
There have been some great Guns that have just hit the shelves,
The D-30, D-44 these would lend too a Great Dio. Also another vehicle is the MTLB and its seen alot in pic's in Afganistan. And there is a Good subject from EE, its the GAZ-66 W/ the Vasilek 85mm Mortar. Now the Truck is o.k. but the Mortar is Great !
GOOD LUCK; MIKE.

The Soviets did not use tanks newer than the T-62, that is, T-72, T-80 in Afghanistan unused.
There are unconfirmed reports that at the beginning of the war the Soviet army used the BRDM-1, but likely BRDM-1 used the local Afghan forces. Also used Howitzer M-30, ZIS-3.
Look this site. All of the weapons used in Afghanistan from both sides:

Lester Grau has written, or assisted in writing, two very good books on the subject (from both sides). They don't focus purely on the equipment involved but rather the battles that took place.
Nevertheless, they are free and may be worth a read if you are interested in the subject:
The Bear Went Over The Mountain (Soviet side)
http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA316729
Other Side Of The Mountain (Muj side)
http://www.tribalanalysiscenter.com/TAUDOC/Other%20Side%20of%20Mountain.pdf
In addition to what others have suggested, you could add:
2S3 Akatsiya - Trumpeter recently released this.
2S1 Gvozdika - Trumpeter has this coming too. I'm not sure if they used the 1 or 3 in Afghanistan but both is a possibility..
T-55 MTP-3 / BMR (mine clearing variant) - Not sure if any aftermarket companies have this available but it's possible.
TOS-1 - Technically it wasn't "used" but it was tested in the Panjshir Valley during the Afghan war. I think there is a 1/35 model out there somewhere for the TOS-1.

You can add the mine-clearing version of the BTR-50 called UR-67 (a.k.a. BTR-50MTK) to the list :

Also the army of the soviet-backed Najibullah government used older stuff like 122mm M30 howitzer or T34/85 tanks, but mostly only in supporting role.

You could get away with using the Trump BMP-1 to represent one used very early on in the war. Trump is also putting out a 1P that you could use as well.Hopefully we'll see a 1D and a BMP-2 (D). Also, the 2S1 and 2S3 that Trump is putting out shortly were also used, but there aren't many pics showing these vehicles(at least that I can find). I've got pics of BRM-1's there as well.

You can add to your list the ASU-85, used in the very first hours of the invasion.

Wow thank you everyone. I appreciate all the info its amazing how much equipment was used and the knowledge on here is great. I haven't decided what kind of diorama or Soviet stuff I want to use. I wanted to get what was used and see what I can do and this is a new subject to me an wanted to learn more about something new. I'll go through the pictures of the stuff mentioned and see what peaks my interest. There is so much it might take me awhile to decide.
Thanks again everyone if anyone knows about the bases used might be a nice diorama also.
Happy Modeling

Yep, I forgot to mention that one. They were used in the assault on the presidential palace in 1979. The only pic I know of the ASU's shows them leaving the airport in Kabul in the snow. I actually just finished Trumps's ASU-85 that I built as my interpretation of that picture.
