HELLO. I'M FROM MEXICO. I'M PLANNING TO BUILD A TIGER BELONGING TO THE 505 HEAVY TANK BATALLION, BUT I HAVE A DOUBT ABOUT THE "CHARGING KINGHT" SYMBOLS. I HAVE DECALS WITH THE KNIGHT IN RED. BUT I SAW A LOT OF PICS SHOWING THE SAME KINGHT IN GREEN, AND ARCHER TRANSFER SALE THE 505 SET WITH RED, GREEN AND YELLOW SYMBOLS. I RECENTLY HEARD THAT EVERY COMPANY HAS DIFFERENT COLOR FOR THEIR CHARGING'S KINGHT SYMBOLS. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHICH COMPANY USED THE RED ONES ( FIRST, SECOND OR THREE) OR IF THE RED ONES WAS NOT USED AT ALL (WILL BE A MESS TO PAINT THE DECAL, BUT THAT'S THE PRICE FOR AN ACCURATE MODEL)
I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME
SORRY ABOUT THE WRITING #:-) [

Panzerfan, the Knight is Red on tanks with Green Cammo and Green on tanks with Red Cammo. It totally depends on which you choose. Most 505 tanks were just two tone cammo, Red and Panzer Yellow or Green and Panzer Yellow. I hope this helps you.

According to my book, Tigers on the Eastern Front, the colors were improvised and did not follow company colors. This is on page 71. Hope this helps. Jarhead

Tiger101, what is your source for this info. would like to add it to my reference colection. I have tons of Tiger reference material, but I didn't have a clue on what to respond to and be accurate

Blaster it comes from the series Panzer Colors II and III and a few books I have on SS units. The texts are quite specific on this. If your building the Tamiya Tiger II the directions show a green cammo with the red knight.

Interesting, Tiger101, because the book Tigers in Combat I also specifically states that the charging knight varied in color depending on what paint colors were available.
I would be very leery of taking things from the Panzer Colors series for certain considering the grave number of errors in those books.
My next question is how would books on SS units tell how a Heer unit painted it's Tigers?

I agree with Paul on this one.... according to everything that i have heard - the knight was painted based on the paint colors available at the time. There may well have been every intention of painting the colors based on company affiliation, but that doesn't mean it was actually done that way. If red paint was not available - they would use the color that was. Just my opinion....
