I’ve just purchased Tamiya’s new Tiran 5 but so far haven’t found too many pictures of them while in service with the IDF. Does anyone have any they could share (I believe the saw action during the 1980 Lebanon War).
Thanks in advance,
Noah

http://idf-armor.blogspot.com/ is probably your best source for photos all in one place. I have a few old books that have photos generally not found online. I'll have a look.

the other place to check is :
http://www.idf-modelling.com/forum/
you'll need to register, but there are many experts here who can answer questions. Just note that there are some that are not too gentle and or kind (they expect that everyone should be as well versed as they are and if you are not, well, you must be an idiot). Not all, but a small group. Most guys on the site are very nice and extremely helpful. I am only posting the warning in case you come across some that seem less than helpful, always better to be prepared than not. Cheers.

Frenchy;
dude you need to start publishing books. The amount of info that you are able to access and post is amazing. I hope that some of the publishers are keeping you on retainer. Cheers!

I'm no IDF expert at all, but I guess these could be Israeli Tiran 5s in the Sinai during the 1973 War :

Those Yom Kippur war photos are of a Tiran 4 (notice the ventilator offset to the right on top of turret). Israeli upgraded T-54 tank. Of course a Tiran 5 would be based on a T-55 and a Tiran 6 on the T-62. For some odd circumstance of history, photos of those in the YKW are pretty rare. Maybe you can find some insight on markings and stowage on the IDF-modeling website. From what I can tell, the Tiran 5 turrets during the 73 war were exactly the same as the Tiran 4 (with a small square stowage box on center back of the turret and 2 jerry-cans offset to the right on the back) After the war, the surviving tanks got another upgrade based on combat experiences of the crews. At this time the big box behind the turret was attached among other useful items. The markings were sparse and pretty generic, painted on chevrons and numbers or Hebrew letters on tarps draped or tied over grab-rails.
Hope this was helpful.

Actually all the the pic's of Tiran 5's that I have seen from the 73' War are of 1964 model T55 with flush Loader's hatch and these only had one Jerry Can on the back of the turret otherwise they were set up about the same as the Tiran 4 turret. There were probably other models of T55 converted to Tiran in service in 73' but so far this is all I've seen. At beginning of 73' War Israel had 146 Tirans in service. 91 were Tiran 4 and 55 were Tiran 5. They equipped 274 Brigade which fought on Sinai Front.

Mig AMMO do a nice book on the Tiran in the Lebanese Wars. 96 pages, with over 300 unpublished and high quality photos of the Tiran.
I used this as primary reference for my Tiran 4 build - http://www.plasticarmour.com/gary_boxall_na.html
