At the rear of most German tanks there are devices called "towing clevis". They are C shaped and are not the U shaped ones near the bottom of the tank. Can anyone tell me how they are used, the material they're made of (determines the color"'), etc. Here's a link with a picture: http://www.realityinscale.com/epages/61537336.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61537336/Products/A35027
Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
According to my finds they are in steel and are used to replace shackles to connect towing cables to the tank.
The loop of the cables are inserted on each side of the piece.

Of the two horns of the C, one hangs onto the towing U bolt, and the other horn holds the towing cable loop. The rectangular devise between the two horns is moveable and raises to lock the clevis to the U bolt and the towing cable so neither end will fly off. The clevis is made of cast steel and is presumably factory painted in the current base color. With use they will have a lot of chipping, rust, and worn bare metal spots.
