I have built the DML ,Tamiya and Trumpeter M1A1 kits . I'm in favor of the Trumpter kit for the following reasons . The fire extuigisher pull handle , the mounting brackets for the turret tool boxes , anti-skid coating , seperate molded torshin bar arms, rear grill doors (not the 1 piece like in the tamiya and DML kits ) . The trumpter kit has the option of the link to link tracks or the rubber band type . There are a few seams and gaps to fill , but it is the better kit to me , DML is a close 2nd . No big pain to build the trump.

Build the Academy M1A1->don't do it! Trust me...
Got the DML M1A2 but its still in the box... really liked the looks of it though...
But that's just what I know of it, for now... there will be more...
Or as Rob (general Sabot) said in an earlier post;
(hope you don't mind me quoting you, rob)
Hope this helps!

Quoted Text
All of the currently produced Abrams tank kits (less the terrible Esci/AMT/Ertl OOP one and the poor Tamiya copy by Academy) have their pluses and minuses.
Tamiya M1A1:
Plus: Good quality, fit and detail. Easy to assemble and builds into a respectable DS/DS version.
Minus: Expensive, only has older style track (started to convert to new track in 1990), only has vinyl track, some detail is simplified due to motorization design, motorization holes need covering, only 2 versions in production (with and without plow)
DML M1A1/A2:
Plus: Four different versions include one with interior and mine plow (3516); one with full crew and interior (3517); M1A2 updated kit (3524) and USMC variant with wading gear (3531), very nicely detailed, has new pattern tracks, individual track links, turret detail is superior to Tamiya. Both the crew men (3020) and mine plow (3804) are sold separately, kits are moderately priced.
Minus: As with all DML kits, the fit is fidgety, especially the bustle rack. Some kits may be OOP, and are getting harder to find. Individual tracks may turn off some builders.
Trumpeter:
Pluses: Cheap and easy to build, readily available, copied the best features from the Tamiya and DML kits, includes both vinyl and link & length tracks (new pattern tracks), four variants available: with mine plow and with mine roller, M1A2 and IFOR M1A1, MILES gear (whoopie light), Hoffman device, .50 cal BFA, removable back deck, separate grill doors, 20mm ammo cans to attach to bustle rack, .50 cal ammo cans, #1 skirt support arm, many clear periscope parts.
Minus:No USMC version, detail is soft in areas, crew figures are bad Tamiya copies, some kits are motorized, overall molding quality is mediocre.
I like the DML ones and have all four. I have several (about 5) of the Tamiya M1A1s, but not the mine plow version, I have the Academy M1A1 and the Trumpeter M1A2 (I have the Esci M1 and M1A1s). I still recommend the DML one over the others.

Jurgen, I do not mind. I have picked up a couple of other Abrams kits since that post. I now have the Tamiya M1A1 w/mine plow and also have the newish Italeri M1A2. The Italeri kit is marginally better than the DML M1A2, but tended to run at about twice the going rate for the older DML kits. It isn't twice as good though.
Others will be able to school you on the latest rebox of the DML M1A1 that is upgraded to represent an OIF USMC M1A1 Heavy. I've got too many Abrams tanks in the que to worry about grabbing the latest ones. Tamiya also has a new M1A2 coming down the pipe.
I've got a couple of Tamiya's R/C 1/35 M1 and M1A1 kits. The M1 is wire remote with battery box, the M1A1 is full function remote complete with radio control. Very neat versions that are 98% identical to their static kits.
One thing I don't like about the Trumpeter kit is that they mold a bump on the inside of every track pad. It's on both the link & length and the vinyl tracks. It is shown on the instruction page so it was put there purposely. I don't know why they did it and they are a real bother to eliminate.
I gave my Academy M1A1 to my son after the infamous Armorama Field trip. He's 13 and only really cares that the tank is the type he got to play on. Still a decent build for a beginner who only wants to have an Abrams. Promised I'd take the kids for another ride on Wednesday afternoon.
Bottom line is that you really can't go wrong with most of the Abrams kits. Better than buying a Tiger

There is a great 'tweaks' file on the ML site. It will have details to the extreme on the most popular kits. Maybe a bit out of date with the few new offerings that are out now.
If you like small scale, tyr the Revell M1A1(HA). It is as detailed as the best 1/35 kits and an amazing kit for any scale. Aslo, it's quite a large subject for 1/72. Honest, it's increadble!

Hey guys,
My most recent attempt at an Abrams was the Revell 1/72 kit. Sweet kit, built it mostly OOTB.
Revell Abrams
Cheers

WOW Okviet,
Pretty cool looking Revell Kit. Nice job. Mean while I have both the Tamiya Kit,
(Which suffered a terrible accident last year and has not been rebuilt as yet. But I have been trying to figure out a way to either do that or simply replace it) And the Trumpeter Kit. Of the two. Both were fun and easy to build. BUT I Really like the detail of the trumpeter kit. Plus all the stuff mentioned about it as well. Which makes it a a funner and more interesting kit than the Tamiya. And as someone already mentioned more affordable as well. I have plans on buying another Trumpeter Kit pretty soon.

WOW, and that puppy is only 72nd scale. I 've only got two M1 kits. The very early Tamiya M1 (105mm) and thanks to Rob the DML m1a1 with plow. Now let's not talk about Pattons!!!
