Yes, they did/could.
I'd say this is one of the Aussie M108's and it have a homemade ACAV-style shield but not the cupola itself. None of the photos I have show one with the full cupola, but I guess that doesn't mean that it never happend. M109 have been seen with both standard and homemade cupolas/shields or just the shield.
