...a knife is not the best way to fend off a shark, you are better using a blunt rod like a broom handle and poking its gills and nose.

They did not know this, at the time. Take, for instance, the U.S.S. Indianapolis. The crew was told that splashing would keep the sharks away.

But those are US NAVY SEALS and they can take on just about
anything!

Kidding aside, I would not try this with a great white but
that shark is no bigger than the diver so a good punch to
the nose and a strike at one set of gills might give the diver
a chance.

By the way, Tom, where do I get a shark like that... does it come with the kit?

Cheers,
Joe

I look at this way. It's WWII and one diver has to get his explosives to the target, the other diver sees the shark and will use anything he has to stop it from getting to to the other guy. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Joe,you may be right,I've heard there's alot of sharks in Quebec .If I recall I got it in one of those small tubes for kids that have fish, animals, etc.

Well I am hip on the story....looking forward to more on
the rest of the resin pour.
I have always wanted to do something with clear resin so
I am watching with great interest.
Thanks for the heads up on the sharks...the toy ones that is.
:)

Joe

great project!
my 2 cents - before you do any pouring, make sure you do a test pour. That means create a small box using the same plexiglass material and pour some envirotex in it. That way, you can be a 100% sure on how the materials will react.

As for the surface, if you are not able to sculpt the envirotex, you can always get some acrylic gel to form the waves after the envirotex has cured. The trick to using acrylic gel is not to apply it too thick because it may not dry perfectly clear, again - it's important to test.

Here's a river diorama I did, but instead of envirotex, I used gedeo crystal resin (epoxy based resin), which I guess is similar to envirotex. However for this, I sculpted the base and waves in styrofoam, made a silicon rubber mould, cast the water in resin, and applied acrylic gel as a final texture. I had to use a sander to polish the sides and coated it with clear varnish (sanded and polished). A lot of work, whew. If I had to do it over again, I'll probably try a different approach.

I can't help you with fish but if you ever need crocodiles,
let me know, I have lots....just haven't been able to find sharks.

That is a fair point, general awareness was not out there for most people, even in the Navy. That said, combat divers were much better trained and were specifically taught about sea life and survival techniques that were not taught to the rest of the Navy. A knife was, and still is I believe, the standard weapon for combat divers and I think it would be easy to grab the knife instinctively forgoing the use of your fists to punch the shark. I would imagine that it would be harder to fight such an urge if you had not experienced the situation firsthand before as well.

The resin is starting to rise. And starting to get quite heavy to left.Sonny,Im quit aware to do it in layers, but thank you for your comments.I don't want the boat to look like it's speeding through the water, but slowing down for the divers. That may be a long way off.Tomorrrow ,more resin and add the shark and diver.Polyfill the coners. Thanks Jeremy.I just watched a show on D-Day and I think we all have to remember these are kids that gave what anything they they could do.Not alot of experience.
All the best to Canada day and July 4 .

Tom

Looking great!

How much resin have you used so far?

Also are you going to remove the glass or plexi dams or
are they there to stay?

Cheers,
Joe

Looking good and coming along a treat. I am interested to see how you show the air bubbles from the divers, as I have allways wondered how you get consistancy in look when working in layers.

Hi Joe,
I've used 2 of the large packages of Envirotex so far.Started on my third yesterday.I'm leaving the plexi on.Possibly a thin frame arond the top.I need to wait til I'm closer to the top to tell if I'll need it or not.
Darren, the bubbles are a question. The only thing I could come up with is to add tiny clear beads to the resin. You'll see in these pics. These are the smallest I could find.I can barely pick them up with my fingers.

Tom I have never worked with anything the depth you have here; but I am wondering about adding bubbles to the resin with a syringe and needle, which will or should give you great control over bubble size and count.

That's A good idea Darren.I was thinking about how I could actually get air into the resin without leaving noticable traces in it.I didn't consider a syringe. After leaving a bubble, the resin should fill in the needle track i would think in theory.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
You can glue progressively larger beads together,in clusters,
behind the divers heads,as if expanding as they head to the surface & adding the occasional smaller bead here and there.
This should create the adequate illusion of expanding air
bubbles from the breathing equipment.
My concern with syringe air bubbles would be that they would
tend to head for the surface as the resin cures and lead to
them maybe disappearing.
Just a thought.

Cheers,
Joe

Thinking about it today I had similar concerns.I'm going to go with the beads.Adding more resin today and more beads. Will post pics later today.

More resin. This is going to take some time on my budget.Waiting for the next 50% coupon.I'm finding that from the sides there is a small visible sign of the laying. From the top it's looking fine.No turning back now.Too much time and effort involved.
