I would get an airbrush. There are some fairly inexpensive models out there, like the Iwata Neo.

The benefit of an airbrush is you can mix paints to get the right shade, and do fine detail work. That's something you can't do with spray cans.

It does rather depend on the project.

If all you need is an overall finish in one colour, or perhaps two, then no, I'd suggest you use a spray can. Spending at least 100 pounds on a piece of kit for one project may not be a good use of funds, especially since you also need to learn how to airbrush, it's not an entirely simple process to get the hang of.

Does a spray can do the same as an airbrush, well not really.

It does in the sense that it atomises paint and sprays it onto a surface, but that is all a spray can does. There is no real control over the process like there is with an AB. You can't mix lighter or darker shades of the same colour to vary your tonal range, you can't spray thin lines, you can't thin the paint right down, it is harder to get a smooth finish in awkward parts of the kit.

Depends on what scale you are painting.
If its 1/35 defo buy an airbrush,1/72 you can get away with a brush.
I remember when I had to paint a 1/16 scale tiger I had to use sprays as airbrush would of taken a life time.
