I recently saw Apocalypse Now for the first time and I got it in my head to build LTC Kilgore's Command Huey, complete with rigged speakers and surfboards.
I've pretty much settled on the 1:48 Revell Huey, but I'm very curious as to whether or not there are figures I could modify or convert to make up the Cav troopers including LTC Kilgore. I wasn't able to find anything online, even at the more common 1:35 and 1:32 scales.

There are some figures you could use in 1/35 scale. For instance:

I'm not sure if the set is still in production though.
I think there were some resin figure sets as well, but can't find them at the moment.

Hi Mike,
the set Mario posted is nice done, only the weapons are not so good. I would change them with ones from trumper M16 weapons set. For plastic ones they are still good and you get four Figures for about 10. Also this one from Andrea Miniatures is really nice done. itīs more 54mm (1:32) but it looks like Col. Kilgore. This Figure is done in white metal.
U.S. Cavalary Officer 1970
First Legion has also some very nice Vietnam Figures which have kneeling poses like in the movie at the beach. They are on the bigger side of 1:35 but together with Dragon Figures it should work. I only prefer Resin Figures for the high quality. They are pricey but outstanding in quality.
The best ones are surely from Bravo-6, Evolution Miniatures (marines) and also Hobby Fan. For better heads i would use hornet heads. They are still the best you can get.
Otherwise there are a lot of Figures aviable for Vietnam in 1:35. Just tipp Vietnam Figures 1:35 in google and you see what i mean.
Bye, bye
Stefan

good luck!

Thanks for the info! I went ahead and bought a set of the Air Cav as well as a chopper crew from Dragon, looks like the figure in the stetson is a close match for LTC Kilogre... now the only problem is finding how to convert the figures from standing to sitting....
Also, as I've clearly now committed to the 1:35 scale, does anyone know a good cheap Huey kit for the UH-1H? A quick google search didn't turn up anything useable except the Dragon UH-1N which I could fiddle around with in a worst-case scenario...

Hi Mike,
Your lucky to find the crew set, hard to find these days.To avoid all the work trying to convert the Stetson I would just cut the heads off him and the pilot and put his head on the pilots body, possibly add a headphone to him.Panda(the original company)made quite a few Hueys that were better kits and at very reasonable cost.I have built quite a few.Do a search for them and see if any are still around.
