I don't think it would be overkill. The FAMo was rated at a 56,000 lb towing capacity and the Morser weighed 36,000 lbs, so in all likelihood, it could tow it.

Hi,
Actually the Sd Kfz 8 was the designated towing vehicle. The 21 cm Morser 18/ 17 cm Kanone 18 would be towed in two loads (barrel and cradle separately). Like this:

But in a hurry and as an exception the Famo could be used:

This is the official way, in practice in the field all things are possible and I suspect the Famo would be used often certainly in retreat.
Cheers,
Pascal

My father's grandfather jsut happened to be a german artillery-towing driver during the whole war and even survived four years on the eastern front. He was in the german 777 Schwere Artillerie Abteilung and I´ve even got his war photoalbum, which I have used as refrence material many times.
I think they mostly towed their 21cm Mörsers with Sdkfz.7's and Sdkfz.8's, but I think there is one picture with my father's grandfather in from of a 18 ton FAMO Sdkfz.9
