I'm working on a Pz III Ausf.J with DAK markings. The capture of Tobruk in '42 to be exact.
Anyway I'm wonder if anyone has in good color photos of the deserts around Tobruk. I'm interested in the color of the dust in the area. Everything I've found from '41 and '42 shows the soil is the normal North African 'yellow' with a slight 'pink' color.
Any info or photos would be helpful.

I would imagine if you found a present day photo of Tobruk the colour would be pretty much the same?

Not sure the desert around Tobruk is any different then the dersert I live in (Arizona) but that pink you see is not the dust but most likely the angle of the sun. With the sun in the correct position stuff gets pretty pinkish especially in early morning or sunset.

Cheers

I recommend AK Interactive North Africa Dust AK-041. Picked up a 35ml bottle for $4 on EBay.

That is the basic color of a lot of the soil in the North African Campaign area, but the photos I've seen of the Tobruk area seem to have pink/red tone to them.
I know for a fact from being there in person that does not even come close to the soil color in the El Alamein area where it is much more brown.
I have the pigments I need I'm just looking for some good photos of the area.

I think I found a photo on a Aussie travel/tour web site that shows that the WWII photos I have are showing true colors, or least close enough.

Any others would still be helpful. Thanks.

If you have been there, what type of photos are you looking for?

I'm looking for photos of the Tobruk area. I have not been there. I have been to El Alamein.

Try Google earth. You can zoom down right to the exact spots. I did it foe El Alamein and was able to see the museum there as well as the tanks displayed in the back of the museum.
