Hi David!

In my models (doesn't maters when or where) I use a dark grey color, Vallejo, using a fine brush.

The result is:

I use dark gray as Marco mentioned then I use a pencil to make some edges 'shiny-metallic' eg: tracks.

You may also use red primer along with dark gray on german afvs and paint it like the base coat is chipped and is showing the red primer, then red primer chipping to show bare metal for some 3d effects.

On allied vehicles I tried using a lighter green tone than the base coat then dark gray for the metal.

AK's chipping color is great aswell.

Thanks guys for the tips. I'm just now learning how to make chipping & stuff. Gonna try the sponge, then the hairspray & finally just a good ole brush. I will use german grey & pencil.
