On unarmoured aircleaners on the m60 there seems to be a couple of clips on the top surface that look like a placard or sign holder. They look similar to the sign holders on semi trucks where they slide in a square sign about dangerous cargo.

I see them in TM manuals in diagrams, but never any comments about their use or google pics with anything there. I know occasionally there's a warning sticker about using protective gear if NBC exposure is suspected.

Any gurus out there know what these clips are to hold? Ya - I'm the same guy that asked the other weird question about the reason for the cutouts in the basket on the rear left of the turret bustle.

You are right, you are asking some weird stuff... It is probably good that you are as there are probably others who were wondering the same thing(s).

Those "clips" are for mounting/securing an a manually operated "oil" pump to the air cleaner box. Not sure what kind of oil, either motor oil or fuel (diesel) but would assume the pump is for transfering fuel from 55 gallon drums, 600 gallon fuel pods, or other vehicles. I could have sworn thatI had seen the clips on late model top loading air cleaners also but will check my photo referances at home.

Fuel pump. If we had to refuel from 55 gallon drums, the hand operated pump would slide in there. To be very accurate, there was only 1 fuel filler on the back deck of an M60. On the right side. So the plates would only be on that air cleaner box.

what Carl said. It was in the TM. Never saw one in person always fueled from 5 ton fuelers.

Carl,
the reason for the pump became obvious to me as I was typing but didn't know for sure... I had a couple of M60A3 platoons in the mid-late 80's and at the time, the pump and associated hoses were no longer part of the BII/AAL.

Stangely enough, ten years later, in Korea we had "captured fuel" pumps and hoses as part of standard tank company equipment. I guess we relearned a previous lesson in Operation Desert Storm...

You guys rock! Thanks so much for answering my strange questions.

I spent some time orienting on Marine M60A1's as a squid - just enough to be able to perform some of the basic functions as I was in the gator Navy and had to work and live amongst the jarheads. As an officer, I wasn't expected to be very smart - but I wanted to make sure I at least had a working knowledge of the equipment we had to haul around and support.

Consequently, the detailed level of knowledge combined with a few too many years that have killed the brain cells where this knowledge may have been housed, have left me ignorant of some of the intricacies such as these questions.
