Hoping someone can help me out. I want to covert one of my DML 6600 Initial Tiger 1s into a DAK 501st Stab Tiger, either #01 or 02. I pretty much have everything I need for the conversion. What I don't have is any info on where the aerial stowage tube may have been mounted on the initial/early Tigers that had the feifel units installed on them. I am assuming that the tube wouldn't have been mounted vertically on the left or right side of the rear of the tank like they were on the Tigers without the feifel units. From what I understand, there are only 1 or 2 photos of a dak stab and those photos don't show a lot of detail. Thanks for any info anyone can provide me.

At the right rear of the hull roof is where the spare antenna tube was located.
I thought all 501st tigers in Africa had 3 digit numbers?

Where did you obtain all the extra parts needed to build you DAK vehicle?

Well, this could be problematic.

On the good side, the large antenna storage tube (not the standard one) is what you're asking about. And the truth is, that slanted position on the left side of the rear wall DID allow it to coexist with the Feifels. It was chosen for that reason. Photos exist.

And, in even better news, the Command Tiger design wasn't complete when 01 and 02 were built. They didn't have the storage tube of a Command Tiger.

But the bad news is, we don't know what they did have. We don't have enough photos. We don't know if they had an MG opening in the mantlet. We don't know if they differed in any way from a standard Tiger.

I pulled the early feifel units out of the academy mid production with interior. I didn't realize that it came with both the early and late versions. I am going to combine that with the voyager late feifel set. I have the tamiya intitial afrika corps kit with the voyager set. I did some measurements and a lot of the parts of off that voyager set will work on the dml kit. Along the way I am going to do the best I can to work from photos and customize it too match. I like things too be accurate but at the same time I am not overly anal about it. As far as the numbering, they were a 3 digit system with the exception of the 2 stabs. The 504th numbering was the same.

Actually this is what I like too hear. Gives me some "artistic" license. That is my favorite thing about building German armor, especially the paper panzers. For me, being creative is the funnest part about building. Thanks for the info.

Outstanding Tiger Dan!!! I really like the worn look. I get a little tired of the "gotta chip every edge so it looks like it's been struck with hammers" look. Would like to see more as well as how. Thanks!!

Awesome! Very well done. I can only hope my attempt at the stab 01 or 02 turns out that nice. I was going to use my Tamiya 35227 but decided to use it for #731 since I already have the archer set for it. Besides, I am looking forward too the challenge of converting the DML 6600 into a DAK. AT some point in the future when I get started on it I will post some photos if I am brave enough. lol

Thanks for posting the process shots and detail information!! Very helpful! Really like the finished product.

How do use the AK paints? I have used the Dunkelgelb primer and Dark Brown from the 45 set and have not been happy with the results. The brown clogged up my a/b even after cutting it with their thinner (supposed to spray right out of the bottle).

What did you use for the netting? Have a 234/2 Puma I would like to toss a net over at some time...

OrangeLion -

How do use the AK paints? Used AK/Model Air primer gray followed by Dunkelgelb and mix a couple drops of AV Retarder Medium (70.597) with some Distilled water - I used AK-550 set Afrika Korps Colors for the two tone camo (RAL 8020 base and about 1/3 RAL 7027). Also mix a few drops of Retarder Medium (keeps the paint from drying too fast). initially the base paint seen too light, (photo) however after applying filter (AK-065) and DAK Wash (AK-066) it darken the color tones.

Used an aftermarket Verlinden Productions "camouflage netting" (No. 0042). Good luck.
