Not to hijack this thread, but I'd be also interested in what kinds of recon a Fennek would do in Afghanistan. I mean it's open terrain for miles and miles around. Why would one even be needed there?

Hi All,
the Bundeswehr uses three differenet variants of the Fennek. First is the standard Aufklärer (recon), armed with MG3 or 40mm Granatmaschinenenwaffe, second is the Pionieraufklärer (engineer recon) and the latest version is the Joint Fire Supporter. The Fennek is mainly use for perimenter security and patrols. The Beobachtungs- und Aufklärungsausstatttung (sensor mast) is a valuable asset in AFG. New additions are the Bugkastenschutz, a frame of round steel tubes on the front of the vehicle and the FLW 200 weapon station. Lets hope the AM industry kicks in when the Trumpeter kit will be released. (Blast Models ???)
Hope this helps

Maybe in some parts of the south it's relatively flat, but the majority of the country is mountains

Tera Nova even? The Defiance ones are a bit too weathered and patched....
