Just wrapped up "Operation Iceberg" by Gerald Astor (great book BTW). In one chapter, a tanker recalls an advance on a Japanese position covered by a German 8.8cm anti-tank gun. Is this a documented use of a German piece by the Japanese? Did they indeed buy/given some? Or did the Japanese have a weapon similar to the German one? No reference in the book as to what type of 88 it was...a Pak or a FLAK.

I have read that the Japanese used two (?) Flak 18 88mm guns on Okinawa (sp). These were captured from the Chinese earlier in the war. The Germans were military advisors to the Nationalist Chinese in the late 1930's and provided them with some equipment to include even German style helmets.
I do not recall the reference, have to go looking.....

Looking at the Wikipedia entry noted above, these might not have been Flak 18/36, but German naval 88s captured at Nanking, or the Japanese copy.
Fascinating stuff either way, and big thanks for the responses!!
