Looking at these pictures and all the others I've found showing PRC armor on parade, they all show 'whitewalls' on the tires or road wheels, which would probably be detrimental to camouflage in combat. It makes me wonder whether the whitewalls are actual whitewall tires and panted rings on the roadwheels of tracked vehicles that would require replacing the tires (and repainting roadwheels) before sending the vehicles into combat, or if it's some kind of applique or a washable paint. Keeping extra sets of tires around just for parades would work, at the cost of being logistically annoying. I know that there are tire paints for repainting blackwall tires into whitewalls, so that's one possibility, but it just seems to be an unnecessary expenditure of man-hours just for a parade; on the other hand, I'm not sure that the Chinese Army is particularly concerned about the vehicle crews having to pull extra hours of maintenance over and above just detailing the vehicles in preparation for a parage, so it may not be a concern for them.

Funny you asked about the white walls. I was wondering as well. I found a picture of a Somalian BTR-60 that had them, but they were obviously painted on

Jason & Sean- The whitewalls seem to be a popular thing in parades and displays for the PLA- the Russians used to use white paint and tape on some of their vehicles during parades too- I'm not sure why really- as you said just an expense of man hours to get it ready and then take it all off again. In fact most of the digital camouflage of the PLA is only seen on display vehicles. I believe it is their new policy to have all vehicles in this camo but even during parades you still see vehicles using a standard splotchy three or four color camo.
As you said Martin the whitewalls would be fairly detrimental to camouflage but if you look at some of their PLAN (especially the ZBD-05) vehicles using a scheme filled with blue colors- sure in theory it might work okay at sea but its not going to be much use in an area of greenery or an area of desert- yet they insist on using it.
