Mike,

Excelent review, but I'm afraid I was not clear enough in my description of muzzle brake differences. This image will show it better:

Note that these are just quick sketches, not scale drawings.

Does the aluminum gun barrel has one or two parallel grooves on top? The Paladin barrel should have TWO parallel grooves, not one like M109A2. I think that some AFV Club images showed correct two grooves on the barrel in Paladin kit, but I'm not really sure. If only one is there, then this would be a fifth small inaccuracy. Another Robert's photo:

So would using a muzzle brake from either the ITaleri kit or the Barrel Depot version be worth it? I have an unbuilt Italeri kit and the barrel ad would rather see the AFV Club enhanced than the Italeri one.

Not worth it, as they ALL represent A2 version. There is no correct A5/A6 style muzzle brake available in 1/35 scale.

Thanks very much for the clarification. Now I see what you are getiing at with the muzzle brake. Also, yes, AFV Club have a new barrel with two grooves.

I will amend the review accordingly.

Both double grooves and reinforced muzzle brake are the only external features indicating that M284 howitzer is installed (and not M185 howitzer of M109A2/A3/A4), what makes it very difficult to tell a difference between M109A4 (M185) and M109A5 (M284).

Paladins today all have a new type of bore evacuator, although many vehicles use it with old style front mounting ring (or whatever this is called) from older evacuator - AFV Club new Paladin kit only includes a new evacuator with a new mounting ring. But early Paladins and all M109A5 howitzers used older style evacuators on M284 howitzers, so it is not an indicator of the type of howitzer installed.

They are 19 mm long and taper to points at the forward end.

Have a look at page 11 of the instructions here: http://modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/5844/afv-club-m109a6-paladin

Mine awaits me at home along with several other kits, which brings me to my point:

Thanks to Pawel's kind endorsement of my Paladin/FAASV files, I've received quite a few requests for those. Please just be advised I will not be home until the 28th.

Thanks.
