are there any commercially available figures in 1:35 that are sitting with their head in their hands? sort of a shellshocked, downtrodden or greiving look? I know I've seen something like this before but cannot remember exactly where.

I would try sourcing artillery crews. I am sure they will have what you are looking for.

Charles,
There is a figure that is sitting with his head in his hands. It is from TANK Miniatures and is kit T-35119 "War is Over" and you can get it from Military Miniatures Warehouse. The kit is of German artillerymen, one dead and the other with his head in his hands in distress. I converted the figure to a US Infantryman in Vietnam for my "Just Another Morning in Vietnam" diorama.
Hope this figure works out for what you are wanting to depict.
Cheers,
James

Masterbox is who you are looking for I believe and it is set 3518 Panzer Grenadiers. The figure is kneeling but simply needs the torso attaching to a seat lower half.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Those both are very good looking figures for what I had in mind. I still remember seeing one of a soldier sitting with his head down and his hands maybe covering his ears (during an artillery barrage?) that ring any bells?
Thanks again,
C.

There is this old Tamiya figure (the one on the right) from the US Gun and Mortar Team set that is covering his ears.
That is the one I thought of as soon as I read your post.
