I'm curious what, if anything you guys use to slow down your paint drying. I've been having an ongoing problem with my paints drying too fast while I'm trying to do detail work and weathering. I use mainly the Tamiya acrylics. I can't really use oil-based or solvent-thinned paints as the wife has asthma and it causes problems for her.

Personally I use Tamiya Paint Retarder. Works like a charm when you mix it in a pallet with your favorite paint. Just a drop, mix and ta-da!

I don't brush-paint Tamiya paints (they're not really water-based acrylics anyways).
However, I do use Vallejo, Andrea, Reaper and Games Workshop (Citadel) acrylic paints for hand-brushing, and I add an acrylic retarder to my pre-mixed thinner.
I use either Golden or Grumbacher acrylic retarders and mix about 5% into the thinner. I use a thinner that's 50:50 water and Vallejo thinner with the acrylic retarder added to about 5% of the total of the other two. I also add Vallejo's Matt Medium at about 5% of the total. I keep a small bottle of this on my paint bench so I don't have to mix it up all the time.
(Basically, I buy a small bottle of the Vallejo thinner, empty it all into my thinner bottle, fill the Vallejo bottle back up with water and add that into the thinner bottle. I then add the Golden retarder and Vallejo Matt Medium to the mix.)
This thinner mixture works well with all of the acrylic brands that I use (except Tamiya, as noted above, which is actually a lacquer and not a water-based paint).

Acrylic paint retarders don't work with Tamiya paints. Use a Tamiya retarder.

Windex works well, for Tamiya. Just one or two drops. I have heard and am not surprised that Tamiya retarder works better.

I don't like to ab acrylics but when I do (no, I'm not the Dos XX dude ) I use Winsor & Newton Flow Improver and Golden Acrylic Retarder from Hobby Lobby. Both seem to help out.

Liquitex Slo-Dri works in all acrylic paints in my experience. It prevents nozzle clogging and allows you to lay down a nice wet coat. Of course, with brush painting, it gives you a much longer working time.

The elusive Tamiya paint retarder I may have to order some since I work mainly with Tamiya acryl. That stuff is hard to find.I have been using Vallejo retardante however it seems in my best interest to use proprietary products, they only cost a bit more with no worries. Personally I use Tamiya Paint Retarder. Works like a charm when you mix it in a pallet with your favorite paint. Just a drop, mix and ta-da!
