I asked this question a while ago. I found out from the Tiger experten on the various websites that the Tamiya early or Afrika Tiger is one of the best. It was one of the more accurate ones, and for me it did not require messing with zimmerit
I did find out that you really can't go wrong with the various Tamiya or Academy Tigers. My aim was for an Afrika Korps Tiger that was a good, solid build. The one you chose may depend on your time frame you wish to depict.

Thanks for the advice Sabot -
I've been doing my SciFi kits to warm up for Armor stuff later.
Hand made zemmerit scares me a little right now.
I like the German gear best so far, and await doing a Tiger and a Sdkfz.
Now I have an idea of where to begin.
I saw a kicking special on Rommell on the History Channel last week.
Afrika Corps looks like a great subject to me.

I agree with Sabot on this one - Tamiya Tigers are really nice.
If you are looking to get an accurate out of the box Tiger - the Afrika version is truley nice. The Tamiya mid and late are excellent kits as well - but require Zimmerit if you want to be historically correct. Of course - that is up to you - no zimm, no big deal... they still look great!

Hi. fireman861, Don't let the idea of Zimmerit scare you. Cavalier makes some very excellent, very thin resin material that is basically a breeze to put on with some trimming and CA. And it looks really nice. Have also tried some Zimmerit resin from ATAK and and it's great as well. In fact, I think this stuff is even thinner than Cavalier's, if that's possible. Sometimes it takes a little fore-thought on how exactly to fit it around certain detail parts on the kit, but this is really no problem.
Good luck and take care, sgirty

I've been doing Zimmerit for years. Have to agree, it is a semi-difficult task. Got the Tamiya King tiger twins on the to do list and have purchased the Cavalier sets for them. I have to agree that Tamiya makes the best Tiger 1, though I really like the Academy early with the interior....despite all the panning over some accuracy flaws.

I would go with the Tamiya Tigers and then with Academy.
