Hi, with the release of the T-90A's recently plus my assortment of other armour waiting to be built that has various ERA or other types of add-on armour (Panzer IV, Type-59D, M60 Blazer, T-80BV and more coming) what is the best way to make sure you get a full covering of paint/Airbrush between, under and around all the add on parts and areas?
Thanks in advance

A good start will be to spray a generous base coat which will hide the kit material color. This way if your airbrush don't completely cover specific areas, this will be less noticeable. You still can use a paintbrush.
But from my own experience, this is really not a real problem. I guess it could be one in the case of German WWII schurzen which both faces remain visible. There the best certainly is to paint both faces of the skirts before definitely setting them in place.

I spray the base color onto the parts in question while they are still attached to the sprue. When it comes time to attach them I just scrap off a little of the paint where I need to apply glue on the various parts. This usually leaves me only having to touch up the attachment points but it assures that there won't be any areas that aren't covered by the base coat.

Smokey and Olivier thankyou for your thoughts. For subjects that use ERA just trying to do the best job possible should be OK but for one that uses passive/spaced armour I think I will definitely have to pre-paint, clean, glue touch up.
Thanks, Andrew

I think that one of the problems is the way some vehicles have an array of ERA blocks across a particular face of the vehicle, with a very narrow gap between them that isn't really amenable to getting good paint coverage on the sides of the blocks. In this case, Smokey's practice of prepainting parts on the sprue is probably the best solution for the base color, and do your best with the camouflage once the blocks are in place; a sergeant would have to be particularly anal to go in with a flashlight to look at the sides of the ERA blocks to make sure that the camouflage lines were properly extended from block to block where they butted against each other.

Hi Andrew!
You can get some ideas at Protection Campaign. On my BMP-3, I painted and wathered all hull before apply the add on armor.
Cheers!
