Now maybe this is carrying things a little too far but you get the idea. The subject matter is the HMS Victory Gun deck.I have seen many pictures of this image but this is the only one I that can find of the diorama as it was originally intended to be shown.

I have always loved shadowboxes and it is exactly because of Shep Paine. Very cool to see these pics of Ober-Shep. The pic of the dio on the throne is particularly awesome.
Of course, your shadowboxes aren't too shabby either.

The best boxed dioramas that I have seen are in museums, as they have the proper space to accommodate them. This type of diorama looks strangely out of place to me,sitting on a shelf or table.Keeping this in mind I would say that a good alternative would be to return them to 2D.If the pic is set up properly with the good lighting , an in-depth composition and a complimentary frame I believe that a nice 3D effect could be achieved. I'll have a go and see what I can come up with.

No matter what people may think of Shep Paine and no matter that he is also responsible for some poor dioramas, ...he has been the top inspiration for so many modellers/diorama builders that all his "sins" ( ) are forgiven!!

What a master to all of us!! Deep bow and greatest respect!

And you John truly are a worthy representative of our "guild"!!

Cheers

Romain

Velcro fasteners make for a quick removal of the side and back walls.

All of the interior, rafters, beams, trusses etc.. will be separate from the walls and removable as one unit. The anchor will be the removable beam that you see about half way down the inside of the diorama.

The base, walls, interior beams&trusses, and the roof will all be separate pieces that will be able to be removed if need be for ease of construction purposes and for photography and transport purpose as well.In the end I will let the museum decide if they want it as is or do they want a more permanent arrangement using screws and glue.

I like the basic composition, if I was doing this piece for myself and other WW1 modelers it would be sufficient to stop here but this piece is going to be viewed by the general public ,especially the younger generations. With this in mind I have decided to add more to the overall visual interest by creating more detail as I did for "The Homecoming" diorama. That story was in the beginning meant to be a lot simpler and appeal mostly to adults ,especially veterans and was originally intended to be titled "The Road Taken."
I realized that this was a mistake, I got into this whole thing with the intention of helping to educate the younger ones about what aviation used to be about many years ago before the modern era by concentrating on the periods before, during and right after WW1.
Through the use of lighting I can pretty much control where the eyes of the viewer will first be drawn to,then it will important to hold that interest using what has been called the "Wow factor"
by letting the viewers eyes discover the more subtle detail through deeper visual exploration. So here's what I am planning....
