Hi,

I'm about to start work on the Berlin Brigade Chieftain using the Tamiya kit and AA's Mk.10 conversion and dozer blade.
I'm wondering if anybody can advise me on which Tamiya or Vallejo paints to use for the cammo.

Any advice anyone can give me would be great.

Thanks,
James

HI,

Thanks for that Frenchy, it's a big help. I don't like using enamel paints, but I may have to go with RAL ones as there doesn't seem to be an exact match for their blue and brown

Thanks,
James

You're welcome James. RAL is not a paint brand, it's the German equivalent of the US Federal Standard 595. Both are color identification systems.

If you want to stick to acrylics, Revell Brown #36381 and Vallejo Intermediate Blue #70.903 (or Revell Greyish Blue #36179) appear to be very close matches...

I wondered why I could.t find any make called Ral, I am a fool! Thanks for the info, I'll probably go for those acrylics, they seem to be by far the closest.

Thanks again,
James

In the event the cold war turned hot, I doubt the handful of tanks would have survived very long against the Soviet and East German forces surrounding West Berlin, no matter how good their cammo was!
Luckily they never had to find out how effective it was!

Hi Guys;

The Urban camo, was Effective when the name Vehicles were observed from Optical devices, when looked from Afar the Urban settings are made up of Geometric Squares that are made up of Different Sizes and Color Hues. Even vehicles that were Moving were Hard too pick up. Esp; at long range, this type of camoflauge is still being tested too this day.

CHEERS; MIKE.

One of the points for the Berlin Urban Scheme was that all the vehicles were painted identically,
so that opposition observers couldn't tell them apart, & therefore couldn't tell HOW MANY there were in Berlin....

Jon, I didn't realise they pained then all the same, sounds like a clever idea, but didn't they all still have registrations numbers on them?

The registrations were different, but you have to get quite close to read them!

Interesting concept - this "standard" camo! (I believe BW Leo 2s in Nato scheme all have the same pattern of 3-tone camo, presumably for the same reason?

Anyway, are there any Tamiya acrylics recommendations for the colours? (Got a Chiefy to build some day...)

Hi Mike,

There doesn't seem to be any matching Tamiya paints, the closest seems to be the Revell acrylics, I've order those and the Vallejo ones based on the links Frenchy provided above.
I'm hoping to complete my Chieftain Mk 10 Berlin Brigade in 10 days next month when I finally have time off work!

James
