I used to be a model railroader, but switched to military modeling mainly because of the cost. Those darn locomotives, switches, etc, simply became too expensive for our budget. We have kids and all. I still have some of my model railroading stuff that I am using to build a module with and still buy a car or building every so often. However, I found the cost too prohibitive to keep up. I am finding military modeling just as enjoyable and a lot cheaper!
P.S. There is no one good place to put this post, so I just put it here.

i fully understand you. I began with modelling from aeroplanes and armor in 1/35 as a youngster with lil money so could not afford to deal with RR though i wanted to . Then after starting working as a single with lots of money in my pocket i quitted modelling while then i could have dealed with RR. And now that i am hooked again forever i am married with a lil kid and a lot of obligations so there is no way to spent a dime on RR. I ll stick with my great love 1/35 armor and dioramas. But i consider that youre a lucky man that have dealed with it. As many i know theyre happy with RR. so this must be fun of another kind

I do both.Though my budget for RR is much smaller.I have a small layout, and don't need to get as many components as other railroaders do.I keep what equiptment I have in good running order, and I am happy with it.

I had been "collecting" HO scale RR parts over the years and finally built the big table for the layout. Ran a bunch of track, had the switches wired, the hole deal. Then I went to buy a couple of decent locomotives. That pretty much end that...

Chuckster:
I do both, i.e. model building, and HO railroading. A pretty good size layout - that is far from completed - resides in the basement. It is slated in the early 50's - steam to diesel transition period. For quite awhile however, I'd rather work on armor than trains. For now, the RR interest is just not there.

I have some train sets when I was young, I did a couple of 1/48 airplanes but liked RR more I lived next to a train yard where I got good detail of everything when I walked to school , me and my friends made layots in my parents basement and we used to split the bill on locomotives, but bought are own cars and houses and built towns, but as most of us have gotten older and it is too expensive, I have gone to the ships for years, but when everything got built then I turned to the internet and the latest war got me inspiried to find some other hobby and found this wonderful site and went into armour and figures, maybe even choppers.

I have done, well three of them...model building is my main love, but growing up I had a HO scale set and when I first got married, living in an apartment, I had a N-scale setup. Once my kids are older, I plan to get back into trains again. The major benefit is the scenery education. I learned more on how to build passable diorama's from MRR.
I think part of the problem is the cost of the high quality Bachman and Life-like engines (wlathers ones too I suppose) and that Athearn took their prices to the roof as well. Lots of people are just tinkering with their older crummy engines to try to bring them to higher specs than to fork out the $$$ for a better engine. Probably why the hobby is starting to wither.

My Dad rigged up pretty cool set up for my brother and I when we were kids. It was on a big board that folded up against the wall like a murphey bed. Later we got tired of RR and switched to model slot cars. We did that pretty hot and heavy for a while then drifted away. My older brother got more interested in real cars, and girls, and I got into models, the plastic kind.

is my dads wooding stuff,
so i have no room and the cost of the stuff.
i did but a n-scale set last year,
i might put it around the tree this year or make an amry sceen with some 1/72 scale tanks

I had a big layout (HO) when I was in High School. It covered a third of the attic. When my parents moved while I was in college, all of the stuff (cars, buildings, track, locos, etc) got packed into three military foot lockers. Thirty years later it is still packed away and gathering dust. I never had the room while in the military and still don't have the room to set it back up. Some of the stuff is probably worth some money, since it was made in the 1930's - 40's.
Oh well, some day I will dig it out of storage and decide what to do with it. Lots of great memories though. :-)

I want to get back into it. Now that I live with my dad, and his basement is huge I am thinking about starting a layout. I have about 4-6 Engines and a lot of rolling stock. They are all pretty "local" engines (CP Rail, Soo Line, Wisconsin Central, CNW) , because they run past my grandmas house.

I was a HO layout freak when I was younger; but I was more interested in building the engines, cars and scenery rather than running the layout. Static modelling of armor and figures gradually took over and my younger brother took over the layout.
My Dad had bought me an American Flyer S-Guage train when I was young in the 50's and I still have that. Always keeps me in touch with my (late)Dad.

I still do both. TH&B is my road. Allows for transitional erea and cross border ops. However, I do more armour than RR.

Was reading through some of the posts and was surprised to see how many of you are/were into model RR. I too, have quite a large collection of HO, but am moving away from
trains because of costs. The prices are really getting out of hand.
I think armor models give a bit more for the money invested.
Regards,
Joe
