I've used Silly Putty as a mask for camo painting. SP is too oily for me. So I'm thinking about using modeling clay as a mask. At least, it's much less oily than SP. Do you see a potential problem of using modeling clay?

Never heard of white-tac before. Is it something I can easily buy at Staples or W-Mart?

It depends on the brand. I'd test it first. I've blue modeloing clay I got from HobbyLobby. Even though there was no oily residue, the clay itself was hard as hell to remove (little tiny bits would cling to the model) and I barely aplied any pressure to it when putting it on the model.
I had better results with C4.

You can find Blu-tac (or white, or yellow) at Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Depot, most any store really that sells office or school supplies. C4 will probably be harder to get.

I used playdough actually. I was nervous about it sticking or leaving a residue so I put it on very loosely. Overall, I think it did the trick as a stop-gap measure, but I still want to invest in a proper mask for painting.

It's not beautiful, and you can tell I rushed, but when it comes down to it, it does the job
