I've asked this before I know, but paint brands and types have changed since that time and I have a PT-76 ready to go. Preferably using acrylic (easier to clean up).

Hi Tom,

A reference I have said that the best match is RAL 6003; I mix Gunze Paints in this ratio
H70 1 Part / H52 1 Part / H36 2 Parts / H22 1 Part the resulting colour is slightly on the green gray side if compared with RAL 6003 straight, but under some weathering to my eye it’s a good match.

Regards

Here's a handy database that could be of some use...

Absolutely. And I must admit I was shocked that Tori Spelling's late father would have had anything to do with modelling.

The name on the website is "Aaron Spilling". I thought for a moment that it was the late TV producer "Aaron Spelling"! (i instead of e").

BTW, I noticed that when I looked up the "RAL 6003" color, it was rather darker than I had anticipated. I thought East German Green was supposed to be fairly light in tone?

Hi Tom,

Sorry for delay back at work and long shifts, yes RAL 6003 is rather dark, when i use my mix i treat this a a base coat and then lighten with either Flesh or Deck Tan, usually Tamiya paint i have only seen 1 NVA Vehicle in the flesh, i was assured that it had not been re painted and up close it was a good match. Strangly from a distance it look like Tam Field Gray, it was a very sunny day.

Speaking of East German paint I was wondering if there is any pics of East German vehicles with late camo patterns?

Hi Antony,

If you search this site and a general google images search you will find plenty, however there is some debate about its use. My info has been basically the NVA had some vehicles painted in this pattern and were planning to roll it out but events, collapse of the DDR put pay to this. The pictures you find are preserved vehicles and many owners have re-painted them using the camo pattern. I have only seen one photo of a museum piece a T72 in a German panzer museum with the pattern. The T72 in Bovington here in the UK, I understand it’s a former NVA tank is plain old green.
