Aftermarket for the Pz.Kpfw 1 Ausf. C VK 601
Posted: Thursday, November 21, 2013 - 10:14 AM UTC
Hi Guys. Do any of you know if there is any suitable aftermarket for the Hobby Boss Pz.Kpfw 1 Ausf. C VK 601? I bought this kit a while back and after reading the reviews have also bought the Friuls for it, as the tracks leave something to be desired. Was wondering if there are any etch sets or what barrels are available. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm building this one as we speak.
By me the tracks seem OK - I've seen elsewhere some comments that they are not so good and / or maybe they don't fit the sprocket right without some fiddle.
I don't need to get something like Friuls, do I?
As for AM - don't know of any PE kit for this one.
Do note, however, that the "main gun" on this wee beastie really did look a lot like a straight pipe. It was a heavy-barrel, magazine-fed 7.92mm "AT rifle" and not an auto-cannon nor a proper MG. Maybe about the only vehicle in the German collection to mount it.
The true MG was, I think, an MG-34, and can be replaced using any of the appropriate shorter MG barrel items.
All the other stuff I see around this little thing - tool clamps, etc., and the legs for those fender tool-boxes - can be sourced from standard PE sets you might already have. The kit provides PE gas-can mounts, I believe.

Don't know how much of this set you can use since it's for a B model but here's this:

So the main gun can be replaced with a piece of appropriately sized brass/aluminum tubing? I also have this vehicle in my stash (somewhere)

Mr Biggles;
I would say "yes" - it can best be replaced with a straight tube. You will probably need to keep that vaguely-conical-looking base piece from the kit barrel and fit the tubing to that. I THINK that there was some faint knurling on this barrel to provide some hand-grip to unscrew it in a manner similar to that of a FlaK 38 2cm barrel. Take a look at pics of the real thing and determine whether you want just to paint on some matt "rings" on an otherwise semi-gloss black barrel.
The co-axial MG looks to have been an MG-34 in an armored sleeve - maybe an AM item or I am thinking seconding a spare from an available Dragon Pz. III or IV kit turret gun...

Hi Guys. Thanks very much for all your help with this. I have already purchased the Voyager set from White Ensign Models in the UK. Thanks for that Peter.
Bob ... I havent looked too closely at the actual kit yet. I did however read through James Taintonīs great build blog on the kit. The images there support your info.
Thanks to everybody for taking the time and posting. I appreciate the help a lot.
Eventhough I have a lot of things ongoing, its been a while since I modelled, so I want to start something fresh. Dont know why just this, but its what appealed to me when I looked at the stash. I will make a start on this when the etch arrives, but have some holidays coming up at Christmas and thats what Im aiming for at the moment. Will post progress shots here when it gets going.
Thanks again.
