I see a lot of armor modelers (both allied and axis) like to put a silver ring around the gun tube right where it goes into the mantle. I guess it is supposed to represent wear from the recoil when the gun fires. I have looked at many, many pictures of the real things and have NEVER seen this. Is this something I'm missing, or are they taking artistic license.

Take a look at a 3.7inch HAA and there is a silvered area, this of course is not valid for all guns.

The only tank I know of with this feature is the M4A1 Sherman. I've even modeled it. The M109A6 Paladin has it as we'll, although it's an SPG. I'm sure there are others, but I'll bet most are hidden by the mantlet cover.

I have looked at tons of pics of Shermans and have never seen this. I'm not doubting your statement, just saying I haven't seen any pics. Can you post a picture of the real thing? That would be great.

They are rather rare, but they're out there.

They are most commonly seen on M3 medium tanks and 76mm Shermans, and most prominently on M1 155mm howitzers.

Well then, I stand corrected.
