Hey all,
I'm very new to armor, but I want to get started with it so thought I'd drop in and hit y'all with some questions.
I've been lurking here for a while, stalking your builds, so it was time the inspiration started to sink in.
To start with I am interested in building an M1 Abrams from the Iraq War time-frame.
This is essentially the only basis I've got, I plan to start with the Dragon 1/35 M1A1 AIM kit, with AFV track set, AFV Anti-Reflection coating lens, SKP taillight/headlight.
I'd like to make it more of a unique vehicle - I've seen a bunch of detail sets in PE and resin as well as specialized conversions for the TUSK variants, and I have an option to add a mine-plow too.
I guess I'd like to find some sort of reference for "barrel art" too and pick something that looks cool, I know there's a tank that has a big veiny eyeball on the turret.
So I suppose my questions are which general detail sets to get for exterior details to make the Dragon base kit even better, which upgrade sets are worth the time and money. Aftermarket M2 machine gun set.
For decals I plan to go Echelon most likely.
Thanks all, I know what was a massively disorganized post, but hopefully someone can make a bit of sense out of it and help with some advice!

You'll have to choose between an Army one or a USMC one, as there are a few differences between the two. I can send you a few OIF pics for both if need be...

In my opinion, you don't need any extra PE sets for the Dragon M1A1 AIM kit. It already comes with 3 sheets of PE in the box.
As Frenchy says though, best bet is to decide on a specific tank and model it as you see it in pics.

Frenchy,
That'd be awesome! If you have any of TUSK + Mine Plow or "special vehicles", that'd be cool B)
Could you send them to my email at alkimediaproductions[at]gmail.com?
Much appreciated,
